A Glimpse In the Life of an Exorcist in the 19th Century Provides Us a Real Look at Spiritual Warfare

"Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out devils: freely have you received, freely give." (St. Matthew 10:8)

Warning: This post contains material that is deeply disturbing.

From 1870-1906 an exorcist toiled, anonymously, somewhere in Christendom. He wrote a journal of his experiences to keep the local Bishop abreast of what he was seeing and hearing. Upon his death in 1906 the completed journal was submitted to the local Archdiocese. 28 years later the Bishop approved its publication after the Holy Office declared that the work was "highly praiseworthy" and that it "contained nothing contrary to the teachings of the Church."

This was the Holy Office of Pope Pius XI. These were not modernists. If they say something is worth publishing, we should pay attention. Please do not send me e-mails admonishing me for "trusting demons." I trust the Holy Office.

The work is known as Mary Crushes the Serpent. It is 56 pages long. You can find a free PDF version floating around online, or you can buy a copy from Amazon for $6. Please note that "Begone Satan" is from a different exorcist - it is a story of an Iowa exorcism that was the basis for the Hollywood movie in the early 1970's.

What struck me, first, was how serious the demons were. I find it hard to take seriously the stories of modern-day exorcists that make demons sound like cartoonish characters with little intelligence or depth, speaking banal platitudes that sound like they came from the keyboard of some bored suburbanite.

To put it mildly, that is not the case here. An example:

The demons plan to harm the Church with every means at their disposal. I reminded Satan during an exorcism that it is not within his power to destroy the Church by quoting: "The gates of hell shall not prevail against her." "We know that," the demon answered coldly, "but we will persecute her as much as it is in our power to do so." (pp. 20)

The exorcist goes on at length about how he always commanded a sign that the demon has really left the person. Most often the demon scratched underneath the person's skin, with three nails, images to leave his mark, or a mark commanded by the priest, before departing. The story of a 12-year-old girl who wrote in blood an agreement selling her soul to a demon in return for trivial things, and being possessed for decades, was especially irksome.

The exorcism of Annaliese Michel makes a lot more sense after reading this book. It was hard to read the transcript of that exorcism and take it seriously, with demons screaming "I AM HITLER! I AM NERO! I AM NAPOLEON!" etc. The book provides an answer to this seemingly bizarre behavour:

"It seems they have a predelection for such names or persons through whom they have evidently and successfully injured the Church. In this time they have imitate generals of war who often bear the name of the battles wherein they gained their decisive and glorious victory. There is a demon by the name of Judas, a demon by the name of Elizabeth of England, a demon by the name of Voltaire....very likely they are the demons who succeeded in harming the Church through these historical characters."  (pp. 10)

In short: individual demons gloat at the conquests of famous people in history that they have corrupted and try to make their power known by adopting that human personalities name. That makes sense.

Ah, the Judas Demon.

The anonymous exorcist makes it clear that this is a demon that he struggled against mightily. It is a powerful demon that corrupts priests, taking its name from corrupting Judas the Apostle, one of the 12 first priests.

This Demon is a problem. A campaign organized by the Church to root it out, diminish its power and guard against it in the future is badly needed. He has badly damaged the Church and corrupted many consecrated souls away from God.

Please keep in mind that this was written before 1906 and think about what has happened in the Church over the last 60 years, especially with the sexual abuse scandal:

The forces of hell also try to corrupt priests. The demon who brags about ruining Judas and who parades under that name is planning with associates to bring about deception, corruption and destruction of priests. Their one aim against priests is to make them traitors. (pp.21)

And, finally...

He takes the future into consideration: "There will be many apostates," he said, "and I will use your priests to erect my own church."

Sobering. Prescient. Real. Dangerous.

The priest who wrote this book explained how the presence of "victim souls," people who are willing to accept suffering to help the Blessed Mother convert sinners to God, is essential for the defeat of these plans. But who is willing to suffer now? Who wants to bear that Cross?

The Vatican Should Shock The World and Declare the Holy Shroud of Turin Worthy of Belief

"But Peter rising up, ran to the sepulchre, and stopping down, he saw the linen cloths laid by themselves; and went away wondering to himself at that which was come to pass." (St. Luke 23:12)

The Holy Shroud of Turin is genuine.

There are many, many reasons to believe so. I have absolutely no doubt - zero - that the Shroud is a genuine article. In the year 2020 AD, with all of the amazing technology of the day, it is impossible for any person to replicate the qualities of the Holy Shroud with modern technology...yet we are to believe that medieval forgers using no technology at all created this Holy article. I'm not even going to dignify that fraudulent "carbon dating" test of 1989 with a response - it has already been debunked thoroughly by non-partisan scientists the world over. "In any form of inquiry or scientific discipline, it is the weight of evidence which must be considered conclusive. In archaeology, if there are ten lines of evidence, carbon dating being only one of them, and it conflicts with the other nine, there is little hesitation to throw out the carbon date as inaccurate."

God is good, always, and the fact that he foresaw the spiritual difficulties of our age and planted this beautiful present for us - the 1898 shock photo negative that shows Our Lord in his Crucified state - to straighten our faith is a testimony to the wonderfulness of the God that we serve.

Excerpt from the book Miraculous Images of Our Lord, pp 204:

The wounds of the scourging have been numbered by one examiner as being between 90 and 120. Another counted 200 wounds. Both agree that the wounds were produced by a dumb-bell shaped instrument identical in size and shape to the Roman flagrum. It was apparent to these examiners that two men inflicted the wounds, the one on the right being taller, more aggressive and sadistic than his companion on the left.

Photographs of the Shroud were taken for a second time during an exhibition in 1931...in attendance at this 1931 exhibition was a young priest, the future Pope Paul VI.

The holy relic was enshrined in peace until October 1, 1972, when a deliberate attempt was made to destroy it by fire, The perpetrator remains unknown, but because of the asbestos inside the reliquary, his efforts were unsuccessful and the Shroud survived.

During the firsts televised exposition of the Shroud the year following the attempt, Pope Paul VI recalled his emotions when he saw the Shroud at the 1931 exposition: "It appears so true, so profound, so human and so divine, such as we have been unable to admire and venerate in any other image."

Demons sent by hell to destroy an item that could cause millions to revert/convert to the Faith? Check.

If Hell knows the power of the Shroud, so should we.

The Vatican, to initiate a revival of the Catholic Faith, and to spark a media frenzy that shakes complacent people out of their materialistic stupor, should immediately declare the Holy Shroud of Turin Worthy of Belief.

All of the Bishops in the World should be there. It should be exposed publicly for the ceremony and everyone should bow and pray at this image which clearly shows the torture that Our Lord endured for our souls.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, Pray for Us.
Christ the King, Have Mercy on Us.

St. Alphonsus Liguori's Writings Show How the Akita Apparition is Scriptural

Thou art weighed in the balance, and found wanting. (Dan. 5:27)

On October 13, 1973 (the 56th anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun) Sr. Agnes received the most vivid of the (locally) approved Akita apparitions:

"As I told you, if men do not repent and better themselves, the Father will inflict a terrible punishment on all humanity. It will be a punishment greater than the deluge, such as one will never have seen before. Fire will fall from the sky and will wipe out a great part of humanity, the good as well as the bad, sparing neither priests nor faithful. The survivors will find themselves so desolate that they will envy the dead. The only arms which will remain for you will be the Rosary and the Sign left by my Son. Each day, recite the prayers of the Rosary. With the Rosary, pray for the Pope, the bishops and the priests."

Compare that with how St. Alphonsus Liguori, Doctor of the Church, described events right before the General Judgement:

Before the coming of the Judge "a fire shall go before Him." (Psalms 96:3) Fire will come down from Heaven, which will burn the earth and all things of this earth: "The earth and the works that are in it shall he burnt up." (2 Peter 3:10). So that churches, palaces, villages, cities, kingdoms, all will become a heap of ashes. This house, corrupted by sin, must be purged by fire. Behold the end to which all the riches, pomps, and pleasures of this earth must come....but behold the heavens open, and the angels come to assist at the judgement, carrying, according to St. Thomas, the symbols of the passion of Jesus Christ: 'When the Lord comes to judgment, the sign of the cross, and the other symbols of the passion, shall be seen.' The cross especially shall appear: "And then shall appear the sign of the son of man in heaven, and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn."  (Matt. 24:30) Cornelius a Lapide says: "Oh, how then, at the sign of the cross, shall sinners weep."
St. Alphonsus Liguori, Preparation for Death pp. 115-118.

To the saints, clearly, the fire is at the very end of time followed by a brief period given to humanity to repent and save itself. The fact that the Virgin Mary, Blessed be the New Ark of the Covenant forever, felt compelled to highlight this as something that happens after "The work of the devil will infiltrate even into the Church in such a way that one will see cardinals opposing cardinals, and bishops against other bishops. The priests who venerate me will be scorned and opposed by their Confreres. The Church and altars will be vandalized. The Church will be full of those who accept compromises and the demon will press many priests and consecrated souls to leave the service of the Lord" which has happened and is clearly happening now, puts this into context of where we are in history and lends further credibility to Sr. Agnes and the Akita apparitions.
