Here comes the Apocalypse, Or a Very Realistic Looking Preview

They cancelled the Mass.

The first thing that they did, in Northern Italy, when faced with a medical emergency was to cancel the Mass.

It wasn't the second thing they did. They didn't cancel schools first, or close malls. It was the first thing that they did. They went after the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, two days before the start of Lent.

Who are "they"? They are the local officials, the mayors, the city Councillors, the governors. Italy is known to have an extremely high concentration of Freemasons in government, and when a crisis arose they followed their evil interior dispositions and attacked the Mass first.

Obviously, even a mayor or governor, does not have the power to cancel the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass in the Catholic Church. That requires the acquiescence of Bishops, and of clergy. And acquiesce these cowardly bureaucrats did.

All it took to cancel Mass for the people of Northern Italy, on the eve of Lent, the holiest time of year for the Mystical Body of Christ, was a few phone calls from local officials and our Bishops caved. They caved and took away the Bread of Life from the people of Italy like they were cancelling a sporting event.

Actually, I have to correct myself. Cancelling Mass wasn't the very first thing that the Italian Bishops did. Last week, when the virus was in its infancy in Italy, the first thing they did was prohibit the reception of the Eucharist on the tongue. They forced Italian Catholics to receive the Eucharist, sacrilegiously, in the hand.

How easy is it going to be for the Antichrist to have Mass cancelled when he begins his attack on the Church proper?

Our Bishops aren't going to say no. Some Bishops will; a vast, vast minority. The rest will willingly provide obedience and cancel the Holy Sacrifice. They have just shown it this week. They are made of weak stuff. God help us.

The Apocalypse arrives in stages. I would argue that the French Revolution was the beginning of the attack on the Church proper. The war against the monarchies in the 19th century, the remarkable apparitions of the Blessed Virgin between 1810-1929, World War 1-2, Communism, Fascism, Modernism, Ecumenism, Vatican II. They are all big steps to the end. We have witnessed the attack on Christendom, on the Church, on the Mystical Body of Christ. We are witnesses.

And I would respectfully say that we are witnessing another giant step forward. Right here, right now.

The curious events surrounding the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI. The befuddling pontificate of Pope Francis - Peter the Roman. Amoris Laetitia. The Amazonian Synod. The Church in confusion and under attack by spiritual monsters such as homosexualist James Martin - SJ and apostate Bishops. The Church under attack in China, with Catholic martyrs begging God to avenge the blood that the Communist government has spilled. Mass apostasy from the faith around the world.

And now.

Locust swarms (a biblical plague) the size of major cities in Africa that have now spread into China in such a severe way that the Chinese fear there may be no rice left in the country causing a massive famine by the end of the year.

A virus that is spreading around the world with a mortality rate 12-24x the conventional flu. Shutting down businesses, disrupting supply chains, causing havoc on the world economy with the promise that millions of deaths could be in the offing.

This is chaos.

This is how change happens.

In the 1990's, during my childhood, I remember seeing these wonderful Nortel Network commercials with the background music The Beatles' "Come Together." It heralded all the promises of technology, of the internet, of globalism. We believed back then, as a society, that with Communism having been defeated, with "the business cycle a thing of the past," with Globalism triumphant that history was over. That what would be in front of us would be material prosperity and peace.

How foolish we were. We are marching to the next series of events that began with the French Revolution. The events accelerate, and slow. It feels like we are in an acceleration now, with the forces that are ravaging the Church, with the love of God that awaits to save us, with our destinies. These are consequential times.

Ash Wednesday - Prayer

Concede nobis, Domine, praesidia militiae christiannae sanctis inchoare jejuniis; ut contra spiritales nequitias pugnaturi, contientiae muniamur auxillis. Per Christum Dominim nostrum. Amen.

Grant us, O Lord, to begin our Christian warfare with holy fasts; that we are about to do battle with the spirits of evil we may be defended by the aid of self-denial. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Coronavirus is the Real Deal - And a Global Pandemic is Now Guaranteed

Be merciful, spare us, O Lord.
Be merciful, graciously hear us, O Lord.
From all evil, (*Deliver us, O Lord)
From all sin*,
From Thy wrath*,
From sudden and unprovided death*,
From the snares of the devil*,
From anger, hatred, and all ill-will*.
From the spirit of fornication*,
From lightning and tempest*,
From the scourge of earthquake*,
From plague, famine and war*,
From everlasting death*.
- Litany of the Saints

Coronavirus, or COVID19, looks like the graveyard of Globalism.

We spent so much time building a world of seamless global transportation and global commerce, because we could, that we didn't spend any time thinking about whether or not we should.

I have been watching the virus carefully now, for six weeks, refraining from writing about it because alarmism and unwarranted fear do not help anybody. The common flu infects and kills tens of thousands of people a year, right? SARS petered out and was contained, right? Perhaps being prudent about sounding the alarm over Coronavirus was the right way to go.

So I waited.

I wanted to see if the Chinese could stop the spread of the virus. They report numbers of new cases, and new deaths, every evening at 7 PM EST.

I wanted to see if the virus stayed within the geographic borders of Southeast Asia.

I wanted to see if the mortality rate of the virus was high.

Now, I have answers, and I can honestly say that alarmism is warranted. Coronavirus is going to be the story of 2020. For example, I believe that the Summer Olympics is going to be cancelled; that there is going to be a stock market panic later on in the year; that this will be a pandemic that will end up being comparable to the Spanish Flu (which ended up killing between 40-55 million people).

First:

Has China stopped the Spread of the Virus?
No.

The Chinese, by the nature of their authoritarianism, have been able to use methods to stop the virus that would never  be tolerated in the West. They have quarantined entire cities. They put machine guns in the face of random people and force them to go to the hospital. They create concentration camps overnight to hold thousands of people that might have the virus. They shut down local media to prevent the spread of information. The police, and the army, have the right to detain anybody indefinitely. 760 million people are living under quarantine.

And yet all of these extreme methods has not been able to slow down, one iota, the spread of the virus. The official numbers demonstrate that new cases have doubled. Videos from region show people collapsing in the streets. Even relying on official governmental figures, the death rate for the virus is 2%, which is higher than SARS. Western medical professionals have guessed that the mortality rate could be as high as 4% (4% of 7 billion people is 280 million).

Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) let the cat out of the bag: the Chinese are completely overwhelmed.

The virus could not be contained by an extremely technologically advanced, organized, authoritarian government.

Has the virus stayed within the geographic borders of Southeast Asia?

This is all new news from the last 24 hours:

As of two weeks ago there were less than 10 cases, total, outside of China.

Is the mortality rate of the virus high?

A typical response from people on the Coronavirus, in the early stages, was "it's no worse than the common flu!"

"Seasonal flu kills 0.1% ie one in a thousand, CFR of 0.1

Covid-19 has a CFR so far outside China of 1.2-5.6%

In Hubei, where it has overwhelmed the capacity of the Chinese to control it and to effectively treat all patients, it is 18%"

In other words, it is anywhere in between 10-53x more fatal than the common flu. The Spanish Influenza, which killed 40-55 million people in a world that only had 1.8 billion people, was around these levels.

What is the bottom line here? What are the theological implications for Catholics, in all of this?

The bottom line is this:

- This is behaving, and spreading, at exactly the rate that scientists imagined a global pandemic would.
- The virus is more lethal than SARS, more adaptable than H1NI, more versatile than the Spanish flu.
-  It takes time for a virus to go truly global and become unstoppable. Unlike movies, where it happens in real time, it can take a full year before a pandemic becomes unstoppable and omnipresent. There are whispers among health professionals that the United Kingdom modeled out what this looks like and they project, in a realistic scenario, 500,000 cases of Coronavirus cases in the United Kingdom by Christmas.

The Achilles Heel of Modernism has always been that it relies on economic prosperity. In times of plenty, in times of economic success, the idea of humbling yourself before a powerful God and begging His intercession sounds unnecessary. The proud and strong do not want to beg for the protection and mercy of a loving God. They are gods in their own minds.

A global pandemic, because of the nature of the world's financial system that relies on debt and constant growth, would be the complete destruction of worldwide prosperity. Governments would default (they are at record high levels of debt, everywhere in the world), Banks would fail, ATM's would stop dispensing cash. Public order would cease.

Man has chosen to forsake the protection of God for the protection of the globalist economic system that was built on nothing but sand. This is why the business and governmental communities freak out over relatively small dips in economic growth: because the world is full of debt and if there are ANY interruptions the world economic system is toast.

And there is about to be an interruption. A big one. As I said, I doubt that the Summer Olympics in Japan will happen at all. I believe they will be cancelled, Japan being a country on the verge of a major outbreak of cases.

I believe that this fall will see a stock market crash, right in the middle of a presidential race (echoes of 2008), that will have unknowable consequences.

We are not ready for what's coming. Somewhere, out there, the virus is spreading. It is oozing through the pores of the globalist system that we have erected. It will shock some out of  complacency. We must be ready with prayers for the conversion of sinners and the preservation of human life. And we must be mentally ready for our lives to change in ways that we cannot currently foresee.

The Quito Apparitions - This is What Happened, In Full

The Internet has its limitations. In the world of Catholic history, thought and research you cannot rely on purely internet sources because they are often incomplete or inaccurate. This was the main reason why I chose not to ever write about the Quito Apparitions, because the current articles were not very good.

This is probably the best current write-up on what happened in Quito, Ecuador between February 2, 1594-December 8, 1634 but even it is incomplete leaving many unanswered questions.

My sources for this article are the books by E. Mary Christie, via Angelus Press; Stories and Miracles of Our Lady of Good Success by Marian Horvat; The Admirable Life of Mother Mariana.

Editor's note, before I get into this proper. Some Benedict-is-Pope people have tried using the Quito Apparitions to bolster their claims that what has occurred to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI was prophesied at Quito. Ann Barnhardt, for example, here, excerpts in a very selective way something that was said at Quito. But the full excerpt, written in the below article, demonstrates that this prophecy has already been fulfilled by Pope Pius IX. The "prisoner in the Vatican" quote is part of a longer paragraph that describes several well-known events that occurred in the mid-19th century. This is such common knowledge that there is even a Wikipedia article on the subject!

Another example is Barnhardt writing an incorrect version of the quote that totally changes its meaning with a picture of Benedict.

Here is the quote, corrected, in context:

"In this supreme moment of need of the Church, those who should speak will fall silent. Dire times will come, when those who should justly defend the rights of the Church will be blinded. Without servile fear or human respect, they will join the enemies of the Church to help them accomplish their designs."

Our Lady of Quito is telling us that Bishops will fall for modernism and fail to protect the Church when the Church needs them most. It's not about the pope to the exclusion of the rest of the Bishops.

Editor's note over.

Mother Mariana de Jesus Torres

Mariana Francisca was born in Spain in 1563. On the day of her First Communion, when she was nine years old, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to her and told her that she was destined to become a religious of the Immaculate Conception. She left Spain at 13 years old, with her aunt and four other Sisters, to found a branch of the Order of the Immaculate Conception in San Francisco de Quito, Ecuador.

The primary source of the following information is preserved for us because Bishop Pedro de Oviedo, tenth Bishop of Quito, having discerned how extraordinary the life of this woman was, ordered Mother Mariana to record her life experiences in an autobiography when she was close to death. One century later the convent's director, Prior Manual de Souza Pereira, compiled this manuscript along with the testimonies of other Franciscans who knew Mother Mariana into The Admirable Life of Mother Mariana of Jesus Torres.

In 1582, at the age of 19, Mother Mariana had a near-death experience. During her time in a state of unconscious she was given a choice to either enter Heaven or return to Earth and serve God. She chose the latter.

On Good Friday of 1588, Mother Mariana was shown a glimpse of the 20th century and a full panorama of the sins therein. The diabolical evils were so widespread that she went into a state of shock, appearing as if she was dead until Good Sunday when she recovered.

On the morning of February 2, 1594, while Mother Mariana was deep in prayer, the Blessed Virgin appeared with the Child Jesus and claimed the title Our Lady of Good Success. On February 2, 1610 the Virgin once again appeared and commanded that a life-size statue be made depicting her as she appeared to the devout religious of the convent. She named a local sculptor, Francisco del Castillo, a devout Catholic and a Marian devotee, whom she wanted to complete the work. Francisco began the sculpturing of the statue, but before he could finish it, in the early morning hours of January 16, 1611, while Mother Mariana was praying before the Blessed Sacrament, the altar was suddenly filled with a brilliant light and she beheld the awesome presence of the Holy Trinity, the Blessed Virgin, St. Francis of Assisi, and the three Archangels St. Michael, St. Gabriel, and St. Raphel. The Church was suddenly filled with the sound of heavenly choirs singing the most beautiful music - and before her eyes, Mother Mariana witnessed the completion of the unfinished statue by St. Francis and the three Archangels.

These events were later attested to in official documentation by Bishop Salvador de Ribera, ninth Bishop of Quito. Bishop de Ribera blessed the statue and placed it where it remains to this day, displayed only three times a year.

Now, we turn to the prophecies. Here is a full, verbatim transcript of what has been contained in the convent for 400 years, on the events of the 19th-20th century:

Satan will reign almost completely by means of the Masonic sects, the clergy and prelates will become corrupt, great impurity will reign, heresies will abound, bad Superiors will destroy the spirit of Religion, Rules in convents and monasteries will become abandoned, the Holy Sacraments will be profaned and abused, people will be without care for spiritual matters, and the light of Faith will be almost completely extinguished in souls. Truly religious souls will be reduced to a small number and vocations will perish.

In this supreme moment of need of the Church, those who should speak will fall silent. Dire times will come, when those who should justly defend the rights of the Church will be blinded. Without servile fear or human respect, they will join the enemies of the Church to help them accomplish their designs. Woe to the error of the wise, to him who governs the Church, the pastor of the flock that my Most Holy Son confided into his care! But when they will appear triumphant and when the authority will abuse their power, committing injustices and oppressing the weak, their downfall will be near. Paralyzed, they will fall to the ground.

Woe to the children of these times because it will be difficult to receive the Sacrament of Baptism and also that of Confirmation. Innocence will almost no longer be found in children, or modesty in women. Like a filthy ocean the massive impurity will inundate the streets, squares and public places with an astonishing liberty. There will be almost no virgin souls left in the world.

Often during this epoch the enemies of Jesus Christ, instigated by the devil, will steal consecrated hosts from the churches, so that they might profane the Eucharistic Species.

As for the Sacrament of Matrimony, it will be attached and profaned in the fullest sense of the word. Masonry, which will be then in power, will enact iniquitous laws with the objective of doing away with the Sacrament, making it easy for everyone to live in sin, encouraging the procreation of illegitimate children born without the Blessing of the Church.

The Christian Spirit will rapidly decline, extinguishing the precious light of Faith until it reaches the point when there will be an almost total and general corruption of customs. The effects of secular education will increase, which will be one reason for the lack of priestly and religious vocations...

...the Sacred Sacrament of Holy Orders will be ridiculed, oppressed and despised. The demon will try to persecute the ministers of the Lord in every possible way, and he will labour with cruel and subtle astuteness to deviate them from the spirit of their vocation, corrupting many of them. These corrupted priests, who will scandalize the Christian people, will incite the hatred of the bad Christians and the enemies of the Roman, Catholic and Apostolic Church to fall upon all priests. This apparent triumph of Satan will bring enormous sufferings to the good pastors of the Church.

In these unhappy times, there will be unbridled luxury which, acting thus to snare the rest into sin, will conquer innumerable frivolous souls who will be lost.

How the Church will suffer during this dark night! Lacking a prelate and father to guide them with paternal love, gentleness, strength, wisdom and prudence, many priests will lose their spirit, placing their souls in great danger.

You Pray a Lot More Than You Think

O Lord, in the multitude of Thy mercies, I will enter into Thy house, and worship Thee in Thy holy temple, and praise Thy name.

It is our duty, as Catholics, to pray. We all know that. Prayer is the nourishment of our souls in between visits to Mass and the reception of the Sacraments. Most of us have periods where we demonstrate more fidelity to our prayer life than other times. That is human nature and it happens to all of us.

There are two kinds of prayer: mental and vocal. Most people think that reciting the "Our Father" or the "Glory Be" in your head, without making a noise, is the extent of "mental" prayer, but they are mistaken. Mental prayer encompasses a lot more than that, and because it does, most of us pray a lot more than we think.

Excerpt from Blessed Be God

[mental prayer] consists of in thought only, as when we think reverently of God, of His eternity, immensity, power, goodness, mercy, and the like; or whenever our mind dwells with pious reflection on divine things, such as the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the Sacraments, the Blessed Virgin or the saints, the future state of souls, heaven, purgatory, and the life to come.

The contemplation of God, of His attributes, or of any divine truths, which arouses pious affections or good resolutions, comes under the head of mental prayer. As we can reflect in our own way and with sentiments of love on the persons of our friends and relatives who are far away, as we can think of their qualities of mind and soul, of all they have done or been to us, so in our minds alone, without the use of words, we can think affectionately and interestedly of God and of divine truths; and that is what is meant by mental prayer.

No special method or system is required for this act of religion. Neither it is necessary to single out for our meditation any particular divine subject. Rather we should dwell on those mysteries which appeal to us most, and from contemplation of which we derive most spiritual fruit. Doubtless the life of our divine Saviour is the most attractive and fruitful subject of our pious thoughts, since it is the easiest to dwell on and the most universal in its appeal.

So there you go. Contemplation of God, of the Mass, of the Sacraments, of Catholicism and its mysteries is a form of mental prayer. You are demonstrating more fidelity to your prayer responsibilities than you thought.

Mailbag Question: What Are the Most Important Books to Read?

I'm going to break this up into tiers: Good Foundation. Intermediate Catholic. Advanced Catholic.

Good Foundation:

A Brief Catechism for Adults
The Latin Mass Explained
Western Europe in the Middle Ages, 300-1475
The Papacy: What the Pope Does and Why It Matters
The Messages of Our Lady of Knock (not a book, but a MUST read: you cannot understand modern history without understanding Church history. And Church history, and the real presence of the supernatural, is summed up in this series. It's a must read. Must. Read.)

Intermediate Catholic:

Jesus of Nazareth, 3 Book Set - Pope Benedict XVI
Second Vatican Council: An Unwritten Story
Manual for Spiritual Warfare
Preparation for Death
True Devotion to Mary

Advanced Catholic

Don't feel overwhelmed at all that you don't know. If you are on this website, the Holy Ghost has (most likely) led you into the Catholic Church, so you are doing fine. Nobody is perfect. It took St. Augustine 12 years to shake off his habitual sins. And in the end, it will all be worth it.

Lourdes is a Living Monument to the Truth of Catholicism

Holy Mary,  Pray for us.
Holy Mother of God,
Holy Virgin of virgins,
Mother of Christ,
Mother of divine grace...
(Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary)

When I was in the process of converting to the Church I was obviously impressed by the modern apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary, but I felt like such obvious proof for Catholicism needed to have convincing explanations, otherwise everyone would be Catholic. Right?

You would be surprised. I read several "skeptical" explanations for what occurred...and there really isn't an explanation for Lourdes. "Mass hallucination" is the best argument for the occurrence (and anyone trained in logic will just laugh at how weak that argument is.) Skeptics try attacking the medical miracles that occur at Lourdes (the Church has a rigorous process for the miracles they approve) but you will notice they never have an explanation for the spring of water itself.

I am not even going to go into the medical miracles that have occurred at Lourdes (yes, the doctors hired by the Church take into account that some people naturally get better from even serious diseases, no they do not explain or account for the medical miracles). I am going to talk about the spring of water.

The spring, existing since time immemorial, was only discovered, underneath a muddy rock, by the instructions of Our Lady of Lourdes herself. This immense amount of water, previously unknown, has become a living monument to the truth of Catholicism. Every day, in every part of the world, angels adore Jesus at the consecration of every Mass that occurs. Every day, this spring of water provides us with a second reminder of what is really "important."

What is "important," what matters above all, is navigating this life successfully to a happy death. I spent almost all of the some of the best years of my life, my youth, obsessing over what my future  career would be and trying to accumulate possessions and accolades. The peace that comes from having purpose, of knowing what is truly important, is the most valuable thing that I will ever know. Every time I leave Mass I thank God for bringing me there, for leading me into the Church, for loving me in a way that I do not deserve.

Lourdes is a living monument to that love. It happened in 1858, when modernity began infesting the Church and the wider world. It's purpose was to be a reminder of eternal truths in a time of great upheaval.

St. Bernadette, ora pro nobis.
Our Lady of Loudes, ora pro nobis.

Ask God For the Necessary Graces

These are two of my favorite prayers these days. They are best said in the morning and will set you up for the day. They are taken from the Blessed Sacrament Prayerbook. I've basically stopped using my Missal at the moment in favour of the BSP. Enjoy! - jd

Ask God for the necessary graces

O my God, Thou knowest my poverty and weakness, and that I am unable to do anything good without Thee; deny me not, O God, the help of Thy grace; proportion it to my necessities, give me strength to avoid anything evil which Thou forbiddest, and to practice the good which Thou hast commanded, and enable me to bear patiently all the trials which it may please Thee to send me.

Resolve to avoid sin and to practice virtue

Adorable Jesus, my Saviour and master, model of all perfection. I resolve and will endeavor this today to imitate Thy example; to be, like Thee, mild, humble, chaste, zealous, charitable and resigned. I will redouble my efforts that I may not fall this day into any of those sins which I have heretofore committed (here name any besetting sin), and which I sincerely desire to foresake. I have the intention to gain all the indulgences I can in favour of the poor souls in purgatory.

Antiphon to the Holy Archangel Michael

Sancte Michael Archangele, defende nos in proelio, ut non pereamus in tremendo judicio.

Holy archangel Michael, defend us in battle, that we may not perish in the tremendous judgement.
