The Internet has its limitations. In the world of Catholic history, thought and research you cannot rely on purely internet sources because they are often incomplete or inaccurate. This was the main reason why I chose not to ever write about the Quito Apparitions, because the current articles were not very good.
This is probably the best current write-up on what happened in Quito, Ecuador between February 2, 1594-December 8, 1634 but even it is incomplete leaving many unanswered questions.
My sources for this article are the books by E. Mary Christie, via Angelus Press; Stories and Miracles of Our Lady of Good Success by Marian Horvat; The Admirable Life of Mother Mariana.
Editor's note, before I get into this proper. Some Benedict-is-Pope people have tried using the Quito Apparitions to bolster their claims that what has occurred to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI was prophesied at Quito. Ann Barnhardt, for example, here, excerpts in a very selective way something that was said at Quito. But the full excerpt, written in the below article, demonstrates that this prophecy has already been fulfilled by Pope Pius IX. The "prisoner in the Vatican" quote is part of a longer paragraph that describes several well-known events that occurred in the mid-19th century. This is such common knowledge that there is even a Wikipedia article on the subject!
Another example is Barnhardt writing an incorrect version of the quote that totally changes its meaning with a picture of Benedict.
"In this supreme moment of need of the Church, those who should speak will fall silent. Dire times will come, when those who should justly defend the rights of the Church will be blinded. Without servile fear or human respect, they will join the enemies of the Church to help them accomplish their designs."
Our Lady of Quito is telling us that Bishops will fall for modernism and fail to protect the Church when the Church needs them most. It's not about the pope to the exclusion of the rest of the Bishops.
Editor's note over.
Mother Mariana de Jesus Torres
Mariana Francisca was born in Spain in 1563. On the day of her First Communion, when she was nine years old, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to her and told her that she was destined to become a religious of the Immaculate Conception. She left Spain at 13 years old, with her aunt and four other Sisters, to found a branch of the Order of the Immaculate Conception in San Francisco de Quito, Ecuador.
The primary source of the following information is preserved for us because Bishop Pedro de Oviedo, tenth Bishop of Quito, having discerned how extraordinary the life of this woman was, ordered Mother Mariana to record her life experiences in an autobiography when she was close to death. One century later the convent's director, Prior Manual de Souza Pereira, compiled this manuscript along with the testimonies of other Franciscans who knew Mother Mariana into The Admirable Life of Mother Mariana of Jesus Torres.
In 1582, at the age of 19, Mother Mariana had a near-death experience. During her time in a state of unconscious she was given a choice to either enter Heaven or return to Earth and serve God. She chose the latter.
On Good Friday of 1588, Mother Mariana was shown a glimpse of the 20th century and a full panorama of the sins therein. The diabolical evils were so widespread that she went into a state of shock, appearing as if she was dead until Good Sunday when she recovered.
On the morning of February 2, 1594, while Mother Mariana was deep in prayer, the Blessed Virgin appeared with the Child Jesus and claimed the title Our Lady of Good Success. On February 2, 1610 the Virgin once again appeared and commanded that a life-size statue be made depicting her as she appeared to the devout religious of the convent. She named a local sculptor, Francisco del Castillo, a devout Catholic and a Marian devotee, whom she wanted to complete the work. Francisco began the sculpturing of the statue, but before he could finish it, in the early morning hours of January 16, 1611, while Mother Mariana was praying before the Blessed Sacrament, the altar was suddenly filled with a brilliant light and she beheld the awesome presence of the Holy Trinity, the Blessed Virgin, St. Francis of Assisi, and the three Archangels St. Michael, St. Gabriel, and St. Raphel. The Church was suddenly filled with the sound of heavenly choirs singing the most beautiful music - and before her eyes, Mother Mariana witnessed the completion of the unfinished statue by St. Francis and the three Archangels.
These events were later attested to in official documentation by Bishop Salvador de Ribera, ninth Bishop of Quito. Bishop de Ribera blessed the statue and placed it where it remains to this day, displayed only three times a year.
Now, we turn to the prophecies. Here is a full, verbatim transcript of what has been contained in the convent for 400 years, on the events of the 19th-20th century:
Satan will reign almost completely by means of the Masonic sects, the clergy and prelates will become corrupt, great impurity will reign, heresies will abound, bad Superiors will destroy the spirit of Religion, Rules in convents and monasteries will become abandoned, the Holy Sacraments will be profaned and abused, people will be without care for spiritual matters, and the light of Faith will be almost completely extinguished in souls. Truly religious souls will be reduced to a small number and vocations will perish.
In this supreme moment of need of the Church, those who should speak will fall silent. Dire times will come, when those who should justly defend the rights of the Church will be blinded. Without servile fear or human respect, they will join the enemies of the Church to help them accomplish their designs. Woe to the error of the wise, to him who governs the Church, the pastor of the flock that my Most Holy Son confided into his care! But when they will appear triumphant and when the authority will abuse their power, committing injustices and oppressing the weak, their downfall will be near. Paralyzed, they will fall to the ground.
Woe to the children of these times because it will be difficult to receive the Sacrament of Baptism and also that of Confirmation. Innocence will almost no longer be found in children, or modesty in women. Like a filthy ocean the massive impurity will inundate the streets, squares and public places with an astonishing liberty. There will be almost no virgin souls left in the world.
Often during this epoch the enemies of Jesus Christ, instigated by the devil, will steal consecrated hosts from the churches, so that they might profane the Eucharistic Species.
As for the Sacrament of Matrimony, it will be attached and profaned in the fullest sense of the word. Masonry, which will be then in power, will enact iniquitous laws with the objective of doing away with the Sacrament, making it easy for everyone to live in sin, encouraging the procreation of illegitimate children born without the Blessing of the Church.
The Christian Spirit will rapidly decline, extinguishing the precious light of Faith until it reaches the point when there will be an almost total and general corruption of customs. The effects of secular education will increase, which will be one reason for the lack of priestly and religious vocations...
...the Sacred Sacrament of Holy Orders will be ridiculed, oppressed and despised. The demon will try to persecute the ministers of the Lord in every possible way, and he will labour with cruel and subtle astuteness to deviate them from the spirit of their vocation, corrupting many of them. These corrupted priests, who will scandalize the Christian people, will incite the hatred of the bad Christians and the enemies of the Roman, Catholic and Apostolic Church to fall upon all priests. This apparent triumph of Satan will bring enormous sufferings to the good pastors of the Church.
In these unhappy times, there will be unbridled luxury which, acting thus to snare the rest into sin, will conquer innumerable frivolous souls who will be lost.
How the Church will suffer during this dark night! Lacking a prelate and father to guide them with paternal love, gentleness, strength, wisdom and prudence, many priests will lose their spirit, placing their souls in great danger.
